Our history with the apple

Agropecuária Schio Ltd. started its activities in January 1987 with the purpose of exploring the livestock activity (beef cattle), the cultivation of cereals and grains and mainly the fruit growing, through the planting of apple trees.

Such was the success of this enterprise that the orchards expanded rapidly, leading the company, in 1991, to build an agro-industrial complex for the storage, processing, classification, and packaging of the fruit produced. Maintaining its expansion policy, Agropecuária Schio has increasingly increased its planting area, encouraging the small producer in the region, responsible for 25% of its production. Furthermore, it has incorporated other companies, expanding its market share and consolidating its leadership position.

Our Nurseries

The Campos de Cima da Serra – RS is located in a region with a temperate climate and natural conditions that match the best climates in the world for apple production, which, added to the technological development of different varieties and remote management via satellite, provides continuous improvement in production.

The seedlings produced in the nurseries of Agropecuaria Schio are intended for its own use, thus the company prioritizes the cultivation of rigorously selected materials, besides conducting and encouraging experimentation, aiming at the development and dissemination of technology in the sector where it operates.

Schio’s orchards are in permanent reconversion. Each year, more than half a million seedlings are produced. The modern varieties that emerge from our research laboratories are taken from the nursery between the months of July and August to be stored in cold chambers for about 60 days. This process is done to break dormancy, supplying the demand of cold hours necessary to have a good sprouting of the lateral buds of the seedlings. Only then are they transported to the orchards to be planted.

STORAGE

Thanks to several storage technologies, Schio apples are offered during the whole year with the same quality as the freshly picked fruit.  It is because of this care, also in the storage process, that the final product has a high level of flavor.
